In 1871 George was living with his parents in Spring Gardens, St John under the Castle, Sussex, England. By 1881 he had moved to South Street in South Malling and was working as a Railway Pointsman and shunter. In 1881 and 1891 he was living in the cottages by the Beddingham Level Crossing near Glynde in Sussex. Here he had the important job of a Railway Pointsman. Sadly the level crossing is now being renovated and the cottages destroyed.
