Grandparents

William Charles Webb was born 1884 in Newhaven, Sussex, England, and died 1955 in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England. He married Mildred Daisy Millen 1915 in Medway, Kent, England, daughter of Thomas Millen and Emily. She was born 1890 in East Preston, Sussex, England, and died 1921 in East Preston, Sussex, England. He married Sarah Bridget White 1923 in Brighton, Sussex, England, daughter of Thomas White and Anne Fitzgerald. She was born 1896 in Leighlin Bridge, County Carlow, Ireland, and died Jun 1950 in Brighton, Sussex, England.

Sadly I never met my paternal Grandparents and my father never really talked about them; as they were born so close to the 1901 census it has been difficult to collect a lot of information. However, I did find my Grandad’s Navy Record which was extensive and I will put this up elsewhere on the site.

In 1901 William signed up with the Navy, having lied about his age to get in, his brother George had already signed up with them. He was taken on as a stoker on the HMS Duke of Wellington in Portsmouth Docks, a dirty job I imagine and George left the Navy early and died with respiratory problems. During the next 22 years he worked on a large number of ships, throughout the world and during World War I. He made his way up from a lowly stoker to a Chief Mechanician on HMS Victory II before leaving the service in 1923.

William and Mildred had one daughter Margaret born in 1917.

William and Sarah had 3 children of which my father was one.

William had a brother Charles who my dad used to spend his summers with in Henfield. He also has an excellent military record which I will put on the site somewhere.
